CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Jess rode back into Clancy at dusk. He rode straight for the jail and Sheriff McClure walked out shaking his head.

“I never seen anyone hunt men the way you do,” he told Jess. “Do you ever stop?”

“I take a break once in a while,” he said sliding out of the saddle. “And I think I’m about ready for one soon.”

“I suppose that’s Jake Taylor you have draped across that horse back there?”

“It is.”

“Well, leave him here and I’ll take him to the undertakers,” McClure said as he took the wanted poster from him. “Looks like you’ve earned another six hundred dollars. I suppose you’re buying supper again tonight?”

“I think I can afford it,” he said as he headed for the livery. “I’m thinking about having a nice thick steak.”

“If you’re buying, I’m eating,” McClure chuckled as he took the horse with the dead body on it and headed for the undertaker’s parlor.

Jess took care of his horses and walked into the cantina, which was quite busy now. Benita and Esperanza were scurrying around delivering plates of food and cleaning off tables, but they still took the time to shoot a quick teasing smile at him. He walked to the bar and Cesar was pouring beers for a few men who were standing there. When he finished, he strolled over to Jess.

“You are back again?”

“Yeah, and I need a room for a few nights,” he said. “And does your beautiful wife have some nice thick steaks back there?”

“Yes she does,” he said grinning. “Just got some in today from one of the local ranchers.”

“Save two of them for me and Sheriff McClure.”

Cesar handed him the key to the room and he walked out the back door, unlocked it and put all his things inside. He took the time to clean the buffalo rifle he had used on Taylor. When he was satisfied it was cleaned and oiled properly, he stood it up in the corner with his other rifles and left his room and sauntered back into the cantina. McClure was already at the bar drinking a warm beer. Cesar poured Jess one and scooted off to serve some other patrons.

“By the way, I ran into Lieutenant Menendez and his men over by Driftwood,” Jess said nonchalantly.

“He’s still at it?”

“Yeah, and he’s brought a lot more men with him this time,” he replied. “I think I counted about forty men and they had supply wagons this time, too.”

“They must really want that Black Heart fellow.”

“I don’t blame them, he took another young girl up in Kearney.”

“Did he kill her?”

“No, I got to him in time to stop him and I was able to put a bullet into his left calf.”

“No shit?”

“Yeah, I told Menendez about it when I saw him,” recalled Jess as he thought about the arrow. This Black Heart fellow uses a strange bow called a crossbow and arrows that have sharp metal tips on them.”

“You should show it to the gunsmith in town,” advised McClure. “If it’s a weapon, he’s either heard about it or saw it.
